I found this interesting, I paraphrase:
Many educators have latched onto the idea that students must "construct" their own knowledge (an assumption based on the psychology of "constructivism") hence the popularity of unguided/less guided teaching methods. The author refutes this assumption, "Withholding information from students does not facilitate the construction of knowledge", the authors seem to be quite clear about this.
I can see how some students may become lost if too much is put upon them to make discoveries in their learning and that full-guidance is often facilitating their focus, but I'm not entirely convinced that some discovery learning isn't highly effective in small doses, especially with higher set students.
Thoughts?
