I like the quote " students cannot get it right for the wrong reasons". We need as staff to make sure when we use hinge questions it confirms deep knowledge and understanding of the subject matter, not that they can just process something and 'guess/work out the answer.
Hinge questions need to be carefully thought through and staff need to be aware of the 'follow on' work dependent on the class/individual responses and not undertake a 'plough on' regardless approach
I agree James, the thought process behind the answers means you have a very clear idea on who 'gets it' and who doesn't. As you said Andy, they can't get it right for the wrong reasons!
Thinking about hinge questions has helped sharpen my questioning generally. It has forced me to really think about what responses I expect from the students and how this demonstrates true understanding, or not.
